As a doctor of podiatric medicine (D.P.M.), your podiatrist is the only specialist trained to care exclusively for foot and ankle problems. The podiatric physician trains as a generalist first, then receives additional training in podiatry to qualify in the specialty.
Residency training in foot and ankle surgery of up to three years is then completed, allowing the podiatric physician to sit for certifying examinations by the American Board of Podiatric Surgery.
