Emergency Medical Training (EMT) at Weiss

Weiss’ EMT Program is run by Trudy Casey, P.A., EMT Director/Coordinator. Casey offers 31 years of experience in the EMT field. The program’s lead instructor is Gunther Kettenbeil, EMTP/FF.

When are EMT classes held?
Classes are held every Monday and Wednesday in Weiss Memorial Hospital’s auditorium, from 5:00 pm to 9:00 pm. The program requires four months to complete, which includes 12 weeks of classes and fieldwork. Classes start in January, May, and September. Registration begins before the start of each semester on a first come, first served basis.

About Weiss’ EMT Program
To pass the EMT program students must score an 80% or above. Students graduate as an EMTB (Basic). A passing score qualifies students to take the state or national board exam in order to become licensed and certified as an EMTP (Paramedic). No student can be a paramedic unless they have an EMTB license first.

The Weiss EMT program works with three ambulance companies (ATI, MedEX, and Pulse) to train students on such procedures as moving and lifting patients with stretchers, oxygen therapy and equipment, and radio communications. There will be an Auto Extrication class with the Lincolnwood Fire Department.

Weiss’ EMT program is licensed and certified by the Illinois Department of Public Health (IDPH), Division of Medical Services. The program costs $995 and covers all exams and fees associated with the auto extrication and ambulance fieldwork. $495 is due at the start of class. The balance is paid halfway through the program. Check with your employer to see if they may pay for the program.

Who is eligible to attend EMT certification training?
Any person who is 18 years of age or older and has a high school education may participate in Weiss’ EMT program. Many students are college graduates. Students must provide a photocopy of their high school or college transcripts or diploma. Students must also provide two letters of recommendation (character references).

What types of people enroll in the EMT program?

  • Nurses
  • CNAs (Certified Nursing Assistants)
  • Pre-med students
  • Fire department personnel
  • Police department personnel
  • Others (life guards, day care providers, security guards, etc.)
