Cardiac Rehabilitation Program

Make A Healthy Recovery With Weiss Memorial Hospital’s Help
Healing your heart and helping you return to an active lifestyle is the goal of the Cardiac Rehabilitation Program at Weiss Memorial Hospital. The program is designed for people with heart disease, including those who have had a heart attack, angina, angioplasty, coronary stent or cardiac surgery. These patients benefit from a personalized program with a high staff-to-patient ratio. The program focuses on strengthening the heart muscle and improving cardiovascular fitness.

Weiss cardiologists lead the Cardiac Rehabilitation Program. These physicians are joined by an experienced medical team that includes an exercise physiologist and two cardiac nurses. As experts in cardiovascular rehabilitation, they share their knowledge to help you make a rapid and healthy recovery.

Our Three-Phase Program

Phase I – In Hospital
Cardiac rehabilitation begins immediately in the form of one-on-one educational discussions and counseling between you and the cardiac rehabilitation staff. The purpose of Phase I is to promote a healthier lifestyle through education and exercise therapy, which consists of monitored range-of-motion activities and progressive walking.

Phase II – Outpatient Exercise Therapy
Phase II begins two to three weeks after hospital discharge. This phase is divided into one-hour sessions three times a week for 12 weeks. The exact hours you attend are arranged by you and the cardiac rehabilitation team. The exercises are determined by the physician and staff. All Phase II patients exercise within the prescribed intensity range and are continuously monitored.

Phase III – Continued Outpatient Exercise Therapy
The Weiss team develops a personalized lifestyle maintenance plan that includes dietary guidelines and a supervised exercise program. They work together with your personal physician during the entire process. Those with risk factors for heart disease may also enter Phase III.

Personal Treatment Tailored Especially For You
You can benefit from the personal attention given to you at Weiss as you work toward building a healthy heart. The staff works closely with you to design a program that meets your specific needs. The individualized program is tailored to enhance your whole body, including flexibility, muscle strength, endurance and cardiovascular fitness. During your exercise sessions, your heart rate and rhythm are continuously monitored.

Make Progress At Your Own Comfortable Pace
When designing your program, the cardiac rehabilitation team takes into consideration your medical history, current physical condition and lifestyle. They will help you become more physically fit at your own pace. You will work on equipment designed to enhance your heart function. And, you’ll gradually build a stronger heart and learn to develop and maintain a lifelong commitment to your health.

For your safety, the clinical staff closely monitors the exertion placed on your heart during your sessions.

Insurance Coverage
Most health insurance policies cover treatment in Phases I and II if patients are enrolled between six months to one year after hospitalization following a heart attack, cardiac surgery or coronary angioplasty and stent. Persons suffering from angina may also enroll. Be sure to check with your insurance company to confirm coverage. Phase III is not covered by insurance.
