Norm Smith, MD, specializes in prostate, bladder and kidney cancers, robotic prostatectomy and other urologic diseases. He is a board-certified urological surgeon and active researcher, focusing on complex multidisciplinary care for urological cancers.
Dr. Smith has published extensively about kidney cancer and testicular factors contributing to benign prostate hyperplasia (BPH) and prostate cancer. He has investigated the uses of nanotechnology in detecting prostate-specific antigen (PSA), which can be used to detect prostate cancer. The nanotechnology can detect PSA levels at a million times lower concentration than traditional testing methods. He also has studied the effectiveness of the best therapies to treat prostate cancer. His career includes an honored membership of the 2010-2011 Leadership Class of the American Urologic Association.
Dr. Smith provides Weiss patients access to all the ongoing clinical studies at the University of Chicago Medical Center. One of the current studies involves prostate cancer patients in “active surveillance” of their cancer. The surveillance—periodic medical observation—can hypothetically delay immediate surgery. The Medical Center, which performs more urologic cancer trials than any other hospital in Illinois, also offers trials for bladder and kidney cancers.
