Strauss Cancer Center

Strauss Cancer CenterThe Strauss Cancer Center at Weiss Memorial Hospital began more than 30 years ago as a unique entity in a community hospital to promote the research and treatment of cancer. Today Weiss' dedicated, on-site oncologists continue to provide highly personalized attention to our patients and their families. Our experienced and caring staff includes nurses and physicians that have been providing care at Weiss for over 30 years. On call 24 hours, seven days a week, the oncology team remains highly accessible to those who need us most.

New, modern facility streamlines care and adds comfort
In December 2008, the offices of our medical oncologists and cancer center moved to the third floor of a new, modern medical office building adjoining Weiss Memorial Hospital. The spacious, state-of-the-art cancer center provides streamlined care and incredible comfort for patients and families. The large treatment bays offer beautiful views of the park and lake. And because the cancer center adjoins the hospital, patients are spared moving to multiple locations for diagnostic tests and treatment. Patients at the center receive a wide range of therapies, from simple injections to complex investigational treatments.

Our team approach means best possible care
Our medical oncology physicians work closely with various surgical specialties and radiation therapy teams to provide the most effective cancer care. Additionally, the University of Illinois provides surgical expertise for cancer cases at Weiss when appropriate. A multidisciplinary tumor board meets weekly to discuss treatment for patients with cancers that require input from multiple subspecialists.

Access to the latest clinical trials and research
The Strauss Cancer Center participates in a wide variety of research programs allowing patients access to the latest clinical trials aimed at improving chemotherapy and hormonal therapy. Research programs are provided through the University of Chicago and two national consortiums, the Cancer and Leukemia Group B (CALGB) and the National Cancer Institutes Clinical Support Unit (CTSU). FDA approved clinical trials sponsored by pharmaceutical biotechnology companies are also available at Weiss. For more information about our clinical trials, contact Karen Elarde-McCuaig, R.N., BS, OCN at (773) 564-5041 or kelarde@weisshospital.com.

Support you need
Weiss sponsors an outpatient cancer support group for women and a prostate cancer support group for men that enable patients to discuss and share concerns and uncertainties that often accompany a cancer prognosis. The cancer support group for women meets on the first and third Mondays of each month on the third floor of Weiss Memorial Hospital. Visit Cancer Support Group for Women to learn more. The prostate support group for men takes place on the third Wednesday of each month in the fifth floor conference room. Visit Us Too—Support Group for Prostate Cancer for more information.
