The University of Chicago Spine Center at Weiss Memorial Hospital treats back and neck problems for a variety of patients. Our board-certified, fellowship-trained physicians care for a wide range of back and spine conditions, from cervical spine disorders and degenerative disc diseases to scoliosis, spine trauma and tumors.
Up to 85 percent of people have experienced back pain during some point in their lives. Many times, this back pain is a result of muscle strain and can heal itself within weeks or months through the use of pain medications, heat/ice therapy and exercise. Chronic back pain, however, may be the result of an underlying condition which may require surgery. If your pain does not subside after nonsurgical options have been exhausted, you may need to seek the advice of an orthopedic spine surgeon.
Purnendu Gupta, M.D., is Director of the University of Chicago Spine Center at Weiss. He is an Associate Professor of Surgery in the Department of Surgery, Section of Orthopaedics and Rehabilitation Medicine at the University of Chicago, Pritzker School of Medicine. He specializes in care of patients with spinal deformities, spinal degenerative disorders, tumors, traumatic injuries and scoliosis.
When surgery is necessary, our highly experienced orthopedic surgeons employ the latest minimally invasive techniques to enable an easier and faster recovery period. Through much smaller incisions than open surgery, our highly trained surgeons stabilize painful joints, decompress pinched nerves, fuse bones and correct deformities.
