Alfonso Mejia, M.D., M.P.H., is a clinical assistant professor in the Department of Orthopaedics at the University of Illinois at Chicago. He also is the Program Director for the Orthopaedic Surgery Residency Program at UIC. He specializes in hand surgery and microsurgery, as well as general orthopedics and fracture care.
 
Dr. Mejia earned his undergraduate degree from the University of Michigan and his medical degree from the University of Illinois. While earning his M.D., he concurrently completed a Master of Public Health degree with a concentration in epidemiology, also at UIC. Dr. Mejia completed his surgical internship at UIC, where he was honored as Intern of the Year, and then completed his orthopedic residency, also at UIC. He then trained in hand surgery and microsurgery during a fellowship at the Christine M. Kleinert Institute at the University of Louisville. He is certified by the American Board of Orthopaedic Surgery, with an added qualification in hand surgery.
 
Dr. Mejia is a fellow of the American Academy of Orthopedic Surgeons and has served on several national committees for the AAOS. He is a member and current regional representative for the Illinois Association of Orthopedic Surgeons, a member of the Chicago Medical Society and Illinois State Medical Society, and former committee member for Continuing Medical Education and Public Health. He serves as a Tactical Emergency Medical Support Physician for the South Suburban Emergency Response Team and is a member of the Illinois Tactical Officers Association.
 
Dr. Mejia has lectured nationally on numerous subjects including: care of the burned hand, informed consent, distal radius fractures, carpal tunnel syndrome, hand fractures, flexor tendon injuries and common injuries of the hand. Dr. Mejia is fluent in Spanish.
