For more than 25 years, Dr. Asok Ray has nurtured an outstanding level of excellence in orthopedic care at MacNeal Hospital. Under his chairmanship, U.S. News and World Report named the department one of the top 20 orthopedic departments in the United States.
Born in Calcutta, India, Dr. Ray earned his medical degree from Calcutta University Medical College. He received post-graduate training in India and then worked with distinguished orthopedic and general surgeons in England and Scotland. There, he earned a prestigious fellowship from the Royal College of Surgeons in Edinburgh, Scotland. He also received a diploma in anesthesia from the Royal College of Surgeons in London. In the United States, Dr. Ray completed a fellowship in orthopedic surgery at Weiss Memorial Hospital in Chicago. He served as a senior resident at Children's Memorial Hospital and finished his residency at Cook County Hospital as Chief Resident under the Northwestern University Residency Program.
Dr. Ray is an assistant professor of Orthopedic Surgery at University of Illinois and Children's Memorial Hospital. He has published multiple articles in the Journal of Clinical Orthopaedics and the Journal of Bone and Joint Surgery. He is also a member of numerous professional associations and a fellow of the Royal College of Surgeons, International College of Surgeons (USA), American College of Surgeons and American Association of Disability Evaluating Physicians. In 2008 The University of Illinois College of Medicine at Chicago - Department of Orthopedics, honored Dr. Ray with a permanent named lectureship, the Asok K. Ray Lectureship in Orthopedics for annual, national and international visiting orthopedic surgeons.
An active philanthropist, this accomplished and well-respected physician helped build a children's cancer hospital in Calcutta, which his foundation now helps maintain. His philanthropic contributions also include working with Mother Theresa, Chicago Coalition for Hunger, and countries such as Mexico, Panama, Costa Rica, and Ecuador. In 2005, he was awarded the Humanitarian of the Year Award by the IMA for his work and contributions to Hurricane Katrina disaster relief. Dr. Ray was also awarded the Paul Harris Fellowship from Rotary International for his service in the Chicago, Berwyn, and Cicero areas.
