Since 2012, orthopedic and sports medicine experts from the Chicago Center for Orthopedics (CCO) have provided medical care to the Chicago Outfit Roller Derby, making the CCO the exclusive healthcare provider for the team’s athletes. The partnership is part of the CCO’s overall commitment to improve the health of the community by caring for both professional players and amateur athletes.
The Chicago Outfit Roller Derby
Founded in the fall of 2007, the Chicago Outfit Roller Derby is a democratic, not-for-profit, all-female, flat track roller derby organization run by the skaters and for the skaters. The Chicago Outfit Roller Derby’s goal hopes to create a positive female community dedicated to contributing to other nonprofit organizations, such as the American Cancer Society, Girls Rock! Chicago, and RAINN (Rape, Abuse & Incest National Network), and other causes.
The Chicago Outfit is a member of the Women’s Flat Track Derby Association (WFTDA). According to the WFTDA, flat track roller derby is a fast-paced contact team sport that requires speed, strategy, and athleticism. The flat track version of the sport evolved in 2001, and has quickly grown to encompass more than 400 leagues worldwide.
To keep the Chicago Outfit athletes as healthy as possible, the CCO's sports medicine specialists provide patient-centric care and expertise. As the CCO strives to build on its commitment to educate surrounding communities about healthy lifestyles and fitness, player and mascot appearances at Weiss Memorial Hospital throughout the season will help promote the importance of physical activity and its role in health for life among hospital employees and patients. Check the Chicago Outfit website for more information and game schedules.
