Weiss Memorial Hospital is host to the Uptown Farmers Market, which occurs weekly from June through October, in the southwest corner of the hospital’s parking lot (corner of Wilson and Clarendon avenues). Farmers Market hours are every Thursday from 7 a.m. - 1 p.m.
The market features locally grown fruits, vegetables, flowers and herbs, as well as organic and healthy breads, jams, honey and teas.
Our farmers market and rooftop garden have recently been featured on WGN's Around Town and WLS ABC Channel 7 News.
Along with healthy food choices, visitors can:
- Find information on living a healthy life through exercise, giving up smoking and eating right
- Participate in diabetes and high blood pressure screenings
- Attend informational talks from dietitians on healthy recipes
During the winter months visitors can purchase fresh produce, cheese, breads and local meats in the Weiss Leland Lobby. Weiss Memorial Hospital is among 28 groups throughout the State of Illinois honored with the 2011 Governor’s Home Town Award. Weiss won for its volunteer-run Uptown Farmers Market and Urban Rooftop Farm.
Health for Life
The Uptown Farmers Market is part of Weiss’ Health for Life initiative, which emphasizes healthy living habits for people of all ages. The drive behind Weiss’ Health for Life initiative is to educate our communities about how to combat diabetes, obesity and other health issues through a healthy diet and lifestyle.
The community also can be part of the effort through the hospital’s Health for Life blog, an online source of information to help people make informed decisions regarding medical care and healthy life choices.
Additionally, Weiss has partnered with volunteers and community groups to nurture an urban garden on the roof of the hospital’s parking garage. This past season, twenty planter boxes were painted to reflect the fruits, vegetables and herbs growing inside of them, including tomatoes, spinach, beets and raspberries. Rain barrels were close by for regular watering by local gardeners, and volunteer teachers held educational sessions on city gardening techniques. The fresh food grown on the rooftop garden is given back to the community through educational experiences, as well as sold at the Uptown Farmers Market.
Visit the City of Chicago’s website for more information about other city farmers markets.
A successful Farmers Market is the result of healthy partnerships with local schools, neighboring block clubs, support from Uptown United and a close working arrangement with the Alderman’s Office.
