CHICAGO (Jan. 15, 2009)—Citing a commitment to Chicago’s Uptown community, Weiss Memorial Hospital today unveiled a new five-story, 166,000-square-feet medical office building (MOB) in partnership with local physicians and businesses. Weiss is the largest employer in the neighborhood and will further contribute to the local economy with expansion into the new MOB.
The hospital will occupy one-third of space in the new building. Currently the oncology department (which includes Lakefront Oncology Associates and the Strauss Infusion Center) and Lakefront Medical Associates (the hospital’s physician group) recently moved into the building. Other tenants include the Fresenius Medical Care Uptown Dialysis Center and the Charles Feinstein and Associates urology practice.
“Weiss’ expansion into the medical office building is especially noteworthy because it comes at a time when many other hospitals and businesses are reducing and contracting,” Weiss CEO Frank Molinaro said. He added that the building represents “community, partnership, growth and the future” as Weiss continues to strengthen the range of health care services it offers.
The architecturally distinctive building connects to the hospital through a shared dramatic steel and glass entrance and also attaches to a secure parking garage via a covered walkway bridge. A new ground-level Walgreen’s is housed on the north side of the building and offers a pharmacy pick-up window inside the building’s lobby. Storefront food shops are expected to open on site in the coming months.
“A new state-of-the-art medical office facility gives confidence to the community that Weiss is committed to providing the best care for our patients,” said Clement Rose, M.D., an internal medicine physician at Weiss and clinical assistant professor of medicine at the University of Chicago. “By adding space for Lakefront Medical Associates, it consolidates our offices here on the Weiss campus and offers more options for patients.”
“The cancer center offers state-of-the-art treatment for patients with care in a setting that rivals any other,” said Stuart Krauss, M.D., medical oncology director at Weiss and clinical associate professor of medicine at the University of Chicago. “The spacious infusion center includes 14 treatment rooms, each with TVs; an onsite pharmacy; large exam rooms with high-tech exam tables to accommodate physically challenged patients; modern research facilities; and tumor registry offices.”
Approximately 300 people attended the grand opening event, many of whom took advantage of facility tours following a ribbon-cutting ceremony. Drinks and hors d’oeuvres were served amid the music of the Brent Kimbrough Quartet.
The MOB is located on Chicago’s lakefront at 4700 N. Marine Drive. For more information about Weiss, visit www.weisshospital.com or call (773) 878-8700.
