CHICAGO (Feb. 12, 2009)—Weiss Memorial Hospital has made its biennial appointments and elections for division chairs and medical staff officers. These positions, effective Feb. 1, 2009, serve alongside the administrative leadership of the hospital and its board of trustees, and are held for two years.

Henry Finn, M.D., chief of orthopedic surgery at Weiss Memorial Hospital, medical director of the University of Chicago Bone and Joint Replacement Center at Weiss, and professor of surgery at the University of Chicago, has been appointed chairman of the Division of Surgery at Weiss. Finn is well known in orthopedics for his invention of the Finn Knee System, an orthopedic prosthesis that debuted in 1991 for limb salvage and difficult knee surgeries. He also has pioneered advances in total hip replacement, revisional knee surgery and skeletal reconstruction. As chairman, Finn will manage the clinical and administrative organization, activities and functions of the division, coordinate inter- and intradepartmental services and programs, and oversee the clinical privileges in the division.

“I am honored to be appointed to this highly regarded position,” Finn said, “and I will work hard to strengthen the Division of Surgery during my tenure as chairman.”

For the Division of Medicine, Amjad Sheikh, M.D., has been re-elected as chairman. Sheikh’s duties include supervising the medicine division in both the administrative and clinical spheres, recommending clinical privileges to division members and implementing a monitoring and development system for members.

“I am humbled that my peers have given me another vote of confidence to serve an additional term as chair of medicine,” Sheikh said.

Khalid Malik, M.D., medical director of the emergency department, was re-elected as president of the medical staff. In his role, Malik acts as the official voice and representative of the medical staff. He appoints committees of the medical staff, supervises and coordinates medical staff activities; serves as a member of the hospital’s board of trustees; chairs the Medical Executive Committee, Credentials Committee and Physician Leadership Committee; and acts as a liaison among the medical staff, trustee board and hospital president.

“I appreciate the support of my colleagues to continue in this leadership position for another two years,” Malik said. “I look forward to growing our team of physicians, and communicating our needs to the board and hospital administration in fostering an environment of personal and professional pride and patient satisfaction.”

Other newly elected medical staff officers are:

  • President-Elect: Amjad Sheikh, M.D.
  • Treasurer: Daniel Katz, M.D.
  • Secretary: Maribe Bangayan, M.D.

“We are fortunate to have such an exemplary caliber of physicians to lead our medical community here,” said Frank Molinaro, chief executive officer at Weiss. “They have served the patients, hospital and community with their excellence in practice, and I am confident they will continue to do so in these leadership roles.”
