CHICAGO (April 1, 2009) — Weiss Memorial Hospital and Home Instead Senior Care present “Senior Springfest—Beauty from the Inside Out”—a fun-filled program for active seniors focused on beauty, health and quality of life— 8:30 a.m. to 1 p.m. on Wednesday, April 29, at Weiss Memorial Hospital, located at 4646 N. Marine Dr.

Senior Springfest looks beyond the usual blood pressure or glucose testing offered at many senior events; instead, it includes a variety of activities and programs for men and women age 60 and older. Events include group exercise, massage therapy, skin care presentations, haircuts and manicures, creative projects, meditation and a seminar on healthy foods.

”It's been a long winter,” said Caren Perlmuter, geriatrics service line director at Weiss. “It’s time for seniors to get out of the house, do something good for themselves and care for their mind, body and spirit.”

Senior Springfest combines feel-good and look-good activities. “We’re really promoting beauty here,” said Susan Phelan, Home Instead owner. “We believe health comes in feeling good from the inside out, and we want to help people in the community look beautiful and feel healthy."

Dr. Martin Siglin, geriatric physician and vice president for medical and academic affairs at Weiss, will deliver a message about emotional and healthy aging as the event’s keynote speaker. He will draw attention to the specialized geriatric care seniors require and how programs like this one help seniors understand areas they need to focus on later in life.

Weiss is located in an area of Chicago with one of the most highly concentrated numbers of elderly residents; an estimated 9,000 people over the age of 65 live in the Uptown neighborhood and about 91,000 seniors live within five miles of Weiss.

For more information or to register for Senior Springfest, call (800) 503-1234. Participants are encouraged to register by Friday, April 24, 2009.
