Participants learn how to control diabetes as nation grapples with epidemic
WHAT: Dozens of diabetics and their caregivers learn about new technology for diabetes monitoring and healthy habits at this comprehensive Diabetic Health Fair. Participants will meet with Weiss Memorial Hospital specialists and pharmaceutical and medical device company representatives to understand more about new insulin and medication treatments, insulin pumps, glucose meters and diabetic nutritional tips. Participants can enjoy healthy snacks and win prizes as part of a “Test Your Knowledge” dietary contest. For more information, people interested in attending can call Weiss at (773) 564-5666.
WHO: Renee Schickler, M.D.
Endocrinologist specializing in diabetes and metabolism at Weiss, and Assistant Clinical Professor at the University of Illinois
*Dr. Schickler will present on the latest diabetic care and then take questions.
Participating companies include Novo Nordisk, Sanofi-Aventis, Lilly, Medtronic, Accu-Chek, LifeScan OneTouch, FreeStyle, Amylin, Actos and Merck.
WHY: The fair will kickoff a special commitment to diabetes care at Weiss as the hospital holds a Diabetes Day monthly to support patients and staff with the disease. It’s estimated that 23.6 million children and adults in the United States have diabetes; 5.7 million of them are believed to be undiagnosed. Some 1.6 million new cases of diabetes are diagnosed in adults each year.
