Chicago, IL (Nov. 21, 2012) – Hosting the unveiling of a one of a kind, refurbished KidneyMobile® last year and continuing to support the fight against a “silent epidemic,” Weiss Memorial Hospital is being honored this year with the Gift of Life Award at the National Kidney Foundation of Illinois’ 27th Annual Gift of Life Gala on Dec. 1. The Hollywood-themed event will take place at the Ritz-Carlton Chicago and will be emceed by Chicago’s own Hollywood couple, CBS 2 Chicago’s Jay Levine and Mary Ann Childers.

The KidneyMobile® is the nation’s only traveling kidney disease screening program for at-risk communities. It has screened more than 30,000 residents in Illinois for hypertension, diabetes and kidney disease.  Many of those individuals were diagnosed with early stages of kidney disease and immediately referred to treatment.  The KidneyMobile® considers its more than 100 community partners crucial to this process. Weiss is among them.

“We are honored to be recognized in this way as we work together to catch kidney disease early and prevent dialysis for patients,” said Jeffrey Steinberg, chief executive officer of Weiss. The KidneyMobile® collaboration is part of Weiss’ Health for Life initiative, which educates patients, employees and the community about healthy living.

The Gift of Life Gala will bring together 400 of Chicago’s physicians, surgeons, corporate leaders and philanthropists to celebrate the accomplishments of the KidneyMobile® and raise funds for the National Kidney Foundation of Illinois, a major voluntary health organization that seeks to prevent kidney disease, improve the health and well-being of individuals and families affected by these diseases, and increase the availability of all organs for transplantation.

Gala co-chair and board member Ingrid H. Deroubaix, VP at Fifth Third Bank, noted, “It is a time for us to reflect on all of our accomplishments, but more importantly it is an opportunity to thank our key partners who make such a difference in the lives of kidney patients throughout our state and without whom the KidneyMobile® program would not be as successful.”

Tickets to the Gift of Life Gala are $400, and table sponsorships are $5,000.  Both can be purchased by visiting www.NKFI.org or by calling the National Kidney Foundation of Illinois at (312) 321-1500.
