Know the facts about breast cancer and how to beat it.

Radiology Department

Weiss Memorial Hospital Radiology is a health care specialty whose personnel are instrumental in diagnosing diseases and fractures, follow up, and preventive care for both inpatients and outpatients.

Phase one of our new radiology department is open.  Part of our expansion includes our Women's Center which provides state-of-the-art technology in the diagnosis of breast tumors:  the Lorad Stereotactic Mammography System.   In addition and in conjunction with mammography, Ultrasound services are located nearby to provide the complete spectrum of care in diagnosis of women's health.

Our new CT and MRI center includes a multislice CT system from General Electric with vascular CT Angiography/3D imaging capabilities as well as a 1.5 Tesla MRI system with advanced peripheral imaging capabilities and true eight (8) channel resolution for superior brain imaging resolution and detail.

More technological advances lie ahead…We invite you to benefit first hand from our renewed commitment to patient care and technology.  Call (773) 564-5131 to schedule your next radiological exam.

Magnetic Resonance Imaging (MRI)
Radiology offers a full spectrum of MR imaging, including MRI of the brain, spine, musculo-skeletal, abdomen, MRCP (MR Cholangio-pancreatography) and MR angiography (including extremities, carotids, and intracerebral exams).  The scanner is a state-of-the-art General Electric Signa 1.5 Tesla short bore magnet.   A short bore magnet provides the convenience of an open magnet with the image quality of a closed magnet.  Claustrophobic patients feel just as comfortable in a short bore magnet as in an open field; however, the field strength of the short bore magnet is up to seven times that of the typical open magnet and the images are of proportionately better quality.

Mammography
Services provided in mammography include film screen mammography, for both screening and diagnostic exams, with needle localization for surgical biopsy.  New to mammography is our Stereo-tactic Biopsy System for immediate tissue sample of a known breast lesion.  The mammography unit’s radiologists and technologists are certified by the American College of Radiology and the FDA. Mammography examinations require physician referrals, and patients and their physicians are informed of their results via letter.

CT Scans
All types of CT examinations of the head, neck, and spine are performed routinely. Diagnosis and treatment of abdominal and chest disorders are assisted by CT-guided biopsies and radiation therapy planning. Two-dimensional multi-planar, as well as three-dimensional reconstruction can be performed on numerous pathological conditions to facilitate medical or surgical treatment plans.

Ultrasound
The ultrasound area performs all imaging studies, as well as guided biopsies, abscess drainages, and aspirations. Studies for evaluation of renal disease, prostatic disease, fetal growth and gynecologic conditions are also performed.

DEXA Screenings
DEXA osteoporosis screening (bone mineral density test) uses the latest technology to detect bone loss while still treatable.

Angiography and Interventional Radiology
The section of angiography and interventional radiology provides a complete range of both vascular and non-vascular interventional procedures. In the angiographic suite, conventional fluoroscopy and digital subtraction angiography are available. In addition to routine angiography and venography, the section performs many specialized procedures, including uterine artery embolization which is a less invasive method which shrinks fibroid tumors in women. This is done in collaboration with gynecologists.  Vertebroplasty of the lumbar and thoracic spine are done to restore strength to the spinal column following a fracture.

Hours of operation are as follows:

  • CT: 6:30 am - 6:00 pm Monday through Friday and 7:30 am - 3:30 pm Saturday.
  • MRI: 8:30 am - 5:00 pm Monday through Friday.
  • Ultrasound: 7:30 am - 5 pm Monday through Friday and 7:30 am - 3:30 pm Saturday.
  • Radiology: 8:00 am - 6:30 pm Monday through Friday and 7:30 am - 3:30 pm Saturday (after hours, patients are accommodated in the inpatient radiology department).

Outpatient Imaging
Radiology is open twenty-four hours a day/seven days a week and available to perform emergency diagnostic procedures if your physician and the radiologist agree the procedure is warranted.  All imaging modalities are located adjacent to the main radiology department on the first floor of the hospital.  Most regular x-ray exams are performed on a walk-in basis – you do not need an appointment.  Other tests, such as MRI, CT, Ultrasound, Mammography, Bone Density, and Special Procedure require an appointment.  Regardless of the type of exam you are having, you must present an order for the procedure, from your physician.  On the day of your procedure, remember to go to Admitting at the main entrance to register before reporting to Radiology for your test.

Inpatient Imaging
If you need an x-ray or other exam as an inpatient, the test will be coordinated by the floor you are on and the x-ray department.
