CHICAGO (July 31, 2015) — Mary Shehan, DNP, RN, has been named Chief Nursing Officer at Weiss Memorial Hospital. She will lead Weiss’ shared leadership model and professional nursing practice efforts in addition to the delivery of excellent nursing care and an outstanding patient experience.

“We are delighted to have Mary part of our leadership team,” said Anthony J. Tedeschi, M.D., chief executive officer at Weiss. “She has a depth of experience that will only strengthen our patient care and nursing program.”

At Swedish, Dr. Shehan led the hospital to Magnet Designation, fostered a nursing shared governance program, established a service line leadership accountability process, and was integral in helping the hospital achieve Stroke Center and Pain Center accreditation. She also served as the Nursing Home Administrator for the hospital’s Extended Care Facility. Prior to Swedish Covenant Hospital, Dr. Shehan held clinical and leadership roles at Holy Family Hospital in Des Plaines and clinical and nursing teaching positions at Triton Community College and Chicago Catholic Hospitals.

Dr. Shehan will continue in her role as an Associate Professor to the Adjunct Faculties at Rush University College of Nursing as well North Park University, College of Nursing. Additionally, she takes on a recently appointed position by the Governor of Illinois as a Commissioner for the North River Expanded Mental Health Services Program, which enables her to work directly with the Chicago community where she lives, ensuring program funding for this underserved population.

“I’m excited to be part of a hospital that’s connected regionally and nationally, as well as committed to a Lean Daily Management quality improvement initiative,” Dr. Shehan said. “My passion always has been with the bedside caregiver, so my priority in this position is for Weiss to continue to provide outstanding patient care, as well as an environment in which staff can grow and develop.”
