CHICAGO (July 6, 2015) — The Colorectal Center at Weiss Memorial Hospital is now open to the Chicago community, offering comprehensive care for colorectal health – from preventive tests like colonoscopies to multidisciplinary care for complex disorders such as fecal incontinence and anal dysplasia.
Serving as co-directors of the Center are internationally-recognized surgeons Anders Mellgren, MD, PhD, FACS, FASCRS, Professor of Surgery and Chief of the Division of Colon & Rectal Surgery at the University of Illinois-Chicago; and Johan Nordenstam, MD, PhD, Assistant Professor of Surgery in the Division of Colon & Rectal Surgery at the University of Illinois-Chicago. With sub-specialty fellowships and extensive experience in colorectal surgery, Drs. Mellgren and Nordenstam bring global expertise in minimally invasive surgery, including robotic, laparoscopic and trans-anal surgical techniques, which provides less pain, scarring and blood loss over traditional, open surgery.
“Our goal is to deliver personal, state-of-the-art care with respect and compassion for those with conditions of the colon, rectum and anal canal,” Dr. Mellgren said.
“Many patients suffer in silence, too embarrassed to consult with a doctor,” Dr. Nordenstam added. “But we are committed to our patients and quality care for them, offering them the latest treatment options.”
The Center’s surgeons help patients with the management of a wide range of proctological conditions, intestinal problems, colorectal cancer, inflammatory bowel disease and pelvic floor problems. They also link patients to primary care doctors, oncologists, gastroenterologists and radiologists at the hospital, when necessary.
“Our specialists take a collaborative approach to offer our patients the best treatment options for colorectal conditions,” said Anthony J. Tedeschi, MD, Chief Executive Officer at Weiss. “Our internationally-acclaimed surgeons – Drs. Mellgren and Nordenstam – will strengthen Weiss’ position in the Chicago market as a leader in innovative care and excellent quality outcomes for our patients.”
Dr. Mellgren’s interests include pelvic floor disorders, colon and rectal cancer, inflammatory bowel disease, minimally invasive robotic surgery, innovative treatment options for fecal incontinence, surgical research and teaching. He is a graduate of Karolinska Institute in Stockholm, Sweden where he received his MD and PhD. He completed research and clinical fellowships in Colon & Rectal Surgery at the University of Minnesota, where he went on to serve more than 10 years as a Clinical Professor, Director of Research, and Director of the Pelvic Floor Center.
Dr Nordenstam’s focus is on colorectal cancer, minimally invasive colorectal surgery (trans-anal endoscopic microsurgery, laparoscopic and robotic surgery), inflammatory bowel disease, frontier treatment options for fecal incontinence and rectal prolapse, surgical research and teaching. He also received his MD and PhD at the Karolinska Institute in Stockholm, Sweden. He completed fellowships in both Colon & Rectal Surgery and Minimally Invasive Colon & Rectal Surgery at the University of Minnesota, where he then took on the role of Clinical Assistant Professor.
