The W.I.S.E. (Weiss Initiative Serving Elders) Senior Center at Weiss Memorial Hospital is home to a wide variety of exercise classes tailored for adults 60 years and older.

While classes have traditionally taken place at Weiss – or via ZOOM during the COVID-19 pandemic – this summer seniors have an opportunity to join a Chi Gung class along Lake Michigan.

A Chi Gung instructor since 2005, Young Klessig began teaching the ancient mind-body exercise at Weiss in 2012.

“Some of our members have been with us for over 10 years,” Klessig said.

With the pandemic dragging on and the group’s senior members at higher risk indoors, the group decided to hold class by Lake Michigan during the summer when the weather allows.

The group meets most Saturday mornings at 8 a.m., just a short distance from Weiss, where Wilson Ave. meets Simonds Dr. in Lincoln Park, south of the dog park.

“If you can wake up early and come to the lake, it is a really peaceful experience,” said Klessig. “Practicing mindful movements and becoming one with beautiful nature is inspiring.”

Klessig welcomes new students to her Saturday class but cautions the outdoor class is geared toward experienced Chi Gung practitioners. For those new to the practice of Chi Gung, Klessig advises attending the Tuesday morning ZOOM class to become comfortable with the basic movements before attending her Saturday class.

The group will continue meeting at the lake each Saturday morning for the remainder of the summer and into the fall until the weather turns cold.
