Team Weiss was proud to be among the thousands of walkers participating in the American Cancer Society’s Making Strides Against Breast Cancer 5k Walk Oct. 15. The Weiss team consisted of employees, family and friends, including several oncology patients and survivors.

“We were very excited to participate in this year’s American Cancer Society (ACS) 5k Walk,” said Oncology Medical Assistant, Luz Mejia, who organized the Weiss team. “We were honored to walk alongside our patients and friends who are survivors or still on their journey.”

The Weiss team was honored to walk alongside oncology patients and breast cancer survivors.

The American Cancer Society’s Making Strides walk is the nation’s largest and most impactful breast cancer movement. This year marked the event’s 30th anniversary, with walks taking place throughout October in more than 150 communities nationwide.

Team Weiss raised nearly $1,700 in donations.

“Raising money and supporting the ACS is something I enjoy doing,” said Mejia. “As the oncology clinical and financial navigator as well as the survivorship coordinator, I see firsthand how our patients benefit from these funds.”

5k participants enjoyed a beautiful day walking along Chicago’s lakefront in support of the American Cancer Society.

Each year the breast cancer event kicks off with a celebration of survivors and a remembrance of those who have lost their battle. Weiss patients shared their thoughts about what the event means to them and why they chose to walk with Team Weiss. Following are two such examples.

“The walk is important for me because I feel like Weiss Memorial saved my life. The doctors and staff have shown nothing but care and compassion for my well-being and keeping my spirits uplifted. I find it an honor to show my pride in representing Weiss Memorial Hospital.” – Deborah Vance, an oncology patient and cancer survivor

“This walk is important and meaningful to me because I want to be an inspiration to other women. To let them know there is hope and power in prayer…I’ve been thriving for 14 years. It is an honor to walk with Team Weiss because not only were they my care team during my journey, but I get to work alongside them every day in our cancer center.” – Regina Long, an oncology patient, cancer survivor, and employee.
