Each June the cancer team at Weiss hosts a Celebration of Life event to honor and commemorate our patients’ journeys of survivorship.

This year, honored guests enjoyed a day focused on fellowship, fun, healing, and learning. The event included speakers, healthy food, meditation, and a special ceremony to honor survivors and loved ones lost.

Weiss Chief Nursing Officer Dr. Yolanda Coleman kicked off the occasion with a welcome to honored cancer survivors, family, and friends.

Guest speaker Angela Davidson, nutrition program manager at the Wellness Institute, provided helpful guidance for a cancer fighting diet. Next, Weiss Orthopedic Spine Surgeon Thomas A. McNally, MD, discussed the impact of cancer treatment on bone health and how to maintain bone strength. Participants then joined Shiva Singh Khalsa, president and CEO of Spirit Rising Foundation, who guided the group through a yoga meditation for breast cancer.

The event concluded with a beautiful recognition ceremony that involved the release of bubbles to remember and honor cancer survivors and those lost to the disease.

“Each year we end our celebration with a special way to honor relatives and friends who are survivors and those lost to cancer. Since 2019 we’ve been blowing bubbles rather than releasing balloons, which is safer for the environment. It’s a meaningful way for us to remember and celebrate those we love,” said Weiss Cancer Program Medical Assistant Luz Mejia, MA.
